  • Follow the Leader - Was towards the end of the early 1990's sports film boom behind The Mighty Ducks and The Sandlot.
    • And within the baseball genre itself, opened amidst a flurry of kid baseball flicks in 1993-1994, alongside The Sandlot, Rookie of the Year, and Angels in the Outfield, which opened two weeks after this movie. This film came out on the short end of that battle, grossing less than the other three.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • Thomas prevails upon Billy's mom to let Billy attend a game with him on a school night because the great Roger Clemens is scheduled to pitch against the Twins, and Thomas has long regretted missing out on a childhood opportunity to watch the legendary Walter Johnson pitch. Roger Clemens wound up pitching for another thirteen years after the movie's release.
    • The movie instituted the newly-implemented Wild Card playoff structure into the plot, a playoff expansion scheduled to begin in the 1994 season (when the film was released). However, baseball didn't finish the 1994 season due to a strike, meaning the film crowned a wild card winner before MLB finally had their first in 1995.
    • Actress Ashley Crow, who plays Billy's mom, eventually did have a son who wound up in the major leagues, outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong.
