YMMV / Lily's Well

Go To

  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: The joke ending has Lily start to throw out random objects from around the house. It then cuts to Derek and Gunther watching her, with Antonio only interrupting when Lily tries to throw out a weed whacker he broke. He then presses a button that causes the garbage can to eat Lily.
  • Catharsis Factor: The homunculus Lily and the original Lily burning down the college of Azoth and the house in the True Ending, effectively destroying both the place that has brought them so much suffering and the Complete Monster of a man who initiated said suffering in one go.
  • Complete Monster: Antonio Tabacchi, a.k.a. Papa, is Lily's abusive father, who murdered his wife at one point and drove Lily away. After Lily made it clear that she will not come back, Antonio decided to create numerous clones of Lily, each of whom he tested on obedience by leaving them alone in the cabin and telling them not to go outside. When each clone left the house and explored the forest, Antonio arranged for them to die in many horrific ways. At some points, he personally exterminated rogue clones, suffocating one clone with a pillow and shooting two in the head. When they found the truth behind their origin, Antonio gleefully revealed his intention of creating a "good girl" who will obey his every order, by transferring some parts of memories of each killed clone to a new one, until she will "learn to listen to Papa".
  • Fashion-Victim Villain: Antonio's outfit makes him look like a fancy duke or a circus clown.
  • Funny Moments: Even in this intensely dark game, you can get a joke ending if you throw out every possible rope material. The scene cuts to The College Of Azoth watching in frustrated bafflement as Lily ignores the well in favour of throwing everything in the house in the trash, all with a gormless smile on her face. Eventually Antonio turns the bin into a flesh-eating monster to stop you ruining his DIY projects, and the game congratulates you on getting the Stupid Idiot End.
  • Heartwarming Moments: After obtaining all of the Rope endings (which all involve Lily dying), the player can dial the full phone number obtained in them. Doing so will allow Lily to contact the original Lily who finds out about her situation and comforts her, saying that Antonio won't be able to hurt her anymore. Eventually, the original Lily shows up and the two of them burn down the house and leave to go get pancakes.
  • Moral Event Horizon: It gets crossed by Antonio for players when he either suffocates Lily with a pillow or when he shoots her in the head. It's usually which ending players get first.
  • Nightmare Fuel: The game involves a nine-year-old who dies in several horrible ways, and it's rife with Realism-Induced Horror regarding child abuse and their struggle to escape.
  • Nightmare Retardant: The art style can suck the horror out of some of the death scenes.
  • Realism-Induced Horror: Even removed from the context of Antonio using some kind of magic and/or advanced science to clone Lily, the game's plot is a disturbingly realistic presentation of a parent emotionally abusing and manipulating their child, and how hard it can be for someone to break out of an abuser's control even if it looks easy on the surface (especially if it's all they've ever known). A notable example is if the player tries to call 911, Lily will say she can't do that because her father told her she wasn't allowed.
  • The Woobie: Lily, thanks to all her death scenes.
