YMMV / Les Chants de Maldoror

Go To

  • Crosses the Line Twice: Maldoror, sitting on a clifftop armed with a rifle, calmly watches a ship leave harbour during a storm, hit some rocks, and sink. Amid the mass of survivors, one sixteen-year-old boy swims bravely towards the shore, and Maldoror takes some time to admire the boy's beauty and bravery and then shoots the kid in the head. Then, a group of sharks attacks the remaining survivors. Maldoror watches all the survivors getting eaten, then identifies an especially large female shark as the most savage one. He waits until all the surviving humans are dead, picks off all the other sharks with his rifle, then dives into the sea, swims up to the female shark and fucks her.
  • Do Not Do This Cool Thing: Ducasse claimed in his letters that Maldoror "sings of despair only to oppress the reader and make him desire the good as remedy." Sure, buddy.
  • Ho Yay: Maldoror and many of his victims experience this with each other.
  • Memetic Mutation: "As the chance meeting of a sewing machine and an umbrella on a dissecting table!"
  • Mind Screw: Non-existent plot, fantastical events happening with no real reason, bizarre and borderline nonsensical imagery... no wonder the Surrealists loved it.
  • Nightmare Fuel: The first canto alone features Maldoror fantasizing repeatedly and graphically about dismembering children with razors and his bare hands, followed by a scene of dogs fighting and eating each other. And it gets worse from there.
  • Squick: Be prepared for frequent atrocities including murder and rape, all lovingly described.
