  • Accidental Innuendo: Vostok's conversation with Stein has this little gem.
Vostok: Have you ever merged with a woman before, Professor? I think you and I are gonna make a wonderful Firestorm.
  • Complete Monster: Valentina Vostok is a Soviet physicist allied with Vandal Savage, who leads "Operation Svarog" to create a Soviet Firestorm to use against America in the Cold War. To this end, Vostok spent years experimenting on humans, resulting in countless casualties from failed experiments. After discovering Martin Stein possessed knowledge about the Firestorm project, Vostok has his friends kidnapped and thrown into a Soviet gulag. Using various methods to interrogate Stein, including a drug that causes excruciating pain, Stein finally talks upon being Forced to Watch his teammates being tortured. Discovering Stein himself is one half of Firestorm, Vostok forcibly fuses herself with him, becoming a new Firestorm, whereupon she manically fire-balls others. In a Bad Future, she creates an army of Firestorms which wipes out nearly every country by the 21st century, content with her own country being destroyed so it can be rebuilt stronger.
  • Esoteric Happy Ending: The team escapes just as Vostok goes nuclear and blows up in the middle of a prison yard as a prison break is happening. Next scene everyone looks happy and accomplished, ignoring all guards and prisoners that were probably killed in the explosion (like the old man Ray helped earlier), some of who, given the Soviet Union's policies for imprisonment, were possibly only there for the crime of disagreeing with the government. The ending also glosses over how much of the problems the team got into were their fault, and the fact that the Soviet Union has at last some knowledge of how Firestorm works.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Rip using the possibility of Sara's family dying to motivate her to kill Stein if necessary is just cruel when it's revealed in the finale that Rip knows that the next time he'll bring Sara back to 2016 her sister will already be dead.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: This music video by Matchbox Twenty featuring Stephanie Corneliussen (Valentina Vostok) has plenty after watching this episode, such as:
    • She starts a fire.
    • The fact that the song title is "She's So Mean".
    • The chorus ends with the line "You'll never her her go, why don't you let her go!?" Vostok met her end after Jax pulls Stein after her and the latter's forced Fusion Dance.
