YMMV / Justice League (2011)

Go To

  • Audience-Alienating Era: The first two arcs of Geoff Johns's run were often seen as emblematic of everything that was wrong with New 52, from its lack of legacy to generic, Scrappy villains (such as Darkseid and David Graves). The Flanderization of the main seven was widely derided, particularly when it comes to Wonder Woman and Batman, as the former was often portrayed as a violent barbarian and the latter as a controlling jerk, with further criticism directed at the controversial romantic pairing of Superman and Wonder Woman. However, Throne of Atlantis is generally seen as a Growing the Beard moment, and the plotlines from Forever Evil (2013) onwards were met with mostly positive reception.
  • Broken Base:
    • This is the comic that started the canon shipping of Superman and Wonder Woman, and while some preferred the traditional shipping of Clark/Lois and Diana/Steve Trevor and loathe this idea, others enjoyed the change-up.
    • Whether Cyborg should be on the Justice League or remain with the Teen Titans is a huge point of contention. Fans who prefer him on the Justice League think it's good that he's graduated from the Titans and put on the same roster as the A-listers, while those who prefer him with the Titans resent the implication that the Titans are a team to "graduate" from in the first place, and dislike the idea of Victor Stone being separated from the family he built with the Titans. Then there's a third camp, including Lewis Lovhaug, who are a middle ground: they like the idea of Cyborg as a member of the League, but despise the erasure of his history with the Titans.
  • Growing the Beard: The general opinion is that the first arc is So Okay, It's Average at best, the second is forgettable, the stuff unrelated to Throne of Atlantis is filler, and Trinity War is rather protracted. However, Forever Evil (2013) marked a significant improvement in the series' reception, with the reintroduction of the Earth-3 characters and the additions of Lex Luthor and Captain Cold as the League's Token Evil Teammates, throwing more emotions into the stories.
  • Replacement Scrappy: Cyborg himself isn't hated, but his removal from the Teen Titans and replacing Martian Manhunter as a founding member of the League is resented by many.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: The Adaptational Jerkass treatment Geoff Johns gave to traditionally nice characters like Superman, Wonder Woman, and Shazam rubbed many fans the wrong way.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot:
    • The issues before and after the Throne of Atlantis event show the Outsider recruiting Cheetah and making plans to do the same to Scarecrow and Black Manta. This ultimately goes nowhere, as the Legion of Doom plot is dropped in favour of the Trinity War.
    • When Captain Cold joins LexCorp during the Amazo arc, he ominously confides to Mirror Master that he is setting up the greatest heist ever. This storyline never receives any follow-up and is forgotten by the time the Darkseid War begins. Unlike other plot threads that Geoff Johns Left Hanging, this one is unlikely to be explored in later comics, since both Luthor and Cold were reverted to their old characterizations in DC Rebirth.
  • WTH, Costuming Department?: A lot of Jim Lee's design choices are criticized, including giving Superman of all people armor, removing the trunks, and adding a collar and extended cuffs.
