YMMV / Invader Zim (Oni)

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Gaz's characterization in "Invader Zim: The Dookie Loop Horror": Has Gaz gone full circle with her back to abusing Dib? Or (since Dib had no memories of Zim killing him multiple times before becoming time-loop immune) did Gaz actually save Dib's life after multiple failures by implanting the chronal device into his skull, said device giving her vague memories of stuffing things into Dib's head and thinking it was natural? Another pertaining to Gaz here is that among the characters shown to be affected by the time loop, she's nowhere to be seen, which is notable since she's a major character and even Membrane was shown. Just a simple writing decision and it can be assumed she's simply spending her loops playing video games, or did Gaz manage to find an escape for herself?
  • Base-Breaking Character: Gaz. To her fans, her original TV series persona was funny, tough, scary, and a badass force of nature everyone on the show thinks twice about crossing. Not to mention it's implied she's only like that because everyone around her (sans Membrane) is so stupid. However, her detractors viewed her as an overly selfish, cruel, and vindictive... something that Vasquez agreed with. The comics and Enter the Florpus have Gaz behaving much more amicably to her brother, outright helping and supporting him in some cases... which, in turn, annoys the former group that misses her more belligerent persona.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • Many of the Alternate Universe Zims introduced in the "Battle Void" arc are extremely popular with fans. In particular 2K and Palindrome.
    • Zib, the ultimate villain of the same arc from above.
  • Fanfic Fuel: Zib's Start of Darkness quickly became a favorite topic for writers in the fandom to explore.
    • To some extent there is looking into what Zim and/or Dib might be up to while trapped in the time loop or even different ways that they might try to escape.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character:
    • Invader Skoodge, who was supposed to be a fairly important character had the series not been cancelled and is well-liked despite his few appearances, hasn't appeared in the comics barring a few offhand mentions.
    • Likewise Tak, although we have had some appearances from her personality as downloaded into her ship's AI.
      • Ultimately, by the time the series ended Skoodge and Tak only appeared in one-panel cameos during a montage in the final issue.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: A common criticism of the comics is that they ignore much of the Myth Arc set up by the proposed later episodes of the television series, with plot elements such as the Resisty and characters like Tak being completely absent.
