YMMV / Hungry Shark Evolution

Go To

  • Demonic Spiders:
    • Mines. All variations of them. Even regular ones cause plenty of damage and knockback to your shark, the latter of which can sometimes knock you into other mines, causing a cruel Cycle of Hurting. And the enormous Ultra Mines (with their highly distinct yellow-and-black coloring) are able to insta-kill anything smaller than a great white. Thankfully, the Megalodon can eat the regular and Mega Mines, while all sharks above can also eat Ultra Mines, effectively eliminating them as a threat.
    • Other sharks. Whenever they spot you, they will either cause a ton of damage or outright kill you. As you unlock bigger sharks, the smaller reef sharks and hammerheads become less of a threat, but great whites can still devour you in a couple of bites — and may God help you if you encounter any of the special sharks.
      • Especially the flippin' Pyro Shark. It's somewhere between the size of a tiger shark and great white, yet can't be eaten by anything smaller than a Big Daddy and spawns (among other places) fairly early on in the starter area home to the Titanic portal and daily reward chest. Its flamethrower breath has a surprisingly long range, and prevents you from eating as long as you're still burning - it's common to still die after escaping it due to this.
    • Submarines. If you see one, and its nose is pointing towards you, run. They fire three torpedoes that cause a lot of damage and a hellishly good amount of knockback, which can push you into other spiders, like the aforementioned Mines and Sharks, and even other submarines. And if you give them more than a few seconds reprieve, they just reload and do it again. Worse, to knock them out, you have to manage to boost into the cockpit, which means hitting it without being shot.
    • Green and especially pink jellyfish. The more common blue jellyfish are mere Goddamned Bats, but the sting of their Elite Mook cousins can drain the life bar of even larger sharks in a heartbeat. Thankfully, all jellyfish are edible to Megalodon and above sharks.
  • Goddamned Bats:
    • Lionfish. You can't eat them until you unlock the hammerhead shark, and they are relatively common. While they don't actively attack you, it's still frustrating to bump into them, completely throwing off your flow.
    • Once you unlock the tiger shark, however, the angler fish become your most annoying enemy at greater depths. Their bites don't do too much damage, but when they spot you, they will bite you. It's hard to counter-attack without getting bitten again.
    • Seal pups. While they're rare, they're angler fish turned up to eleven. They appear in packs and will bite you immediately if you wander into their field of view. Once they've bitten, they'll latch on and continuously deal damage, preventing you from eating anything until they decide to let go. Thankfully, they provide a lot of health on consumption, so they aren't too bad.
    • Blue jellyfish. They don't do as much damage as green and pink jellies, but they can make you scramble around for health until you unlock the great white shark, which can eat them.
    • Scuba divers. They come in two varieties: red divers will shoot a speargun at you, and green divers will attack you with a knife. They can combo-attack you with the latter and basically guarantee you damage.
    • Stingrays. Whenever you get near them, they will actually avoid you for a second before stinging you with their tail.
  • Sequel Displacement: Presumably owing to its significantly-expanded gameplay and more extensive marketing, the game has almost entirely eclipsed the preceding trilogy of Hungry Shark games in cultural memory.
  • That One Achievement: Pyro shark's meteor storm quest is a nightmare, due to their gold rush only activating after half a million points, and only then for a few seconds. The meteors only spawn close to shore and seldom wipe out prey before you can.
