YMMV / House Party (1990)

Go To

  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: In the second movie at the party, Kid looks at Miles, who is with Sydney, and Miles' head turns into that of a werewolf when he tells him "She's mine!"
  • Crosses the Line Twice: Kid getting an off-screen ass whooping by his dad for disobeying orders normally wouldn't be funny, even for the '90s, but Robin Harris' monologue, and Kid's over-the-top shrieks of pain make it darkly hilarious.
  • Critical Dissonance: The second and third movies were critically savaged, but still managed to pull in over $19 million each at the box office.
  • Heartwarming Moments: Play selling his Mustang to get Kid the tuition he needs at the end of the second movie, proving he truly cares about him as a friend.
  • So Okay, It's Average:
    • The second film which is universally considered better than the fourth, fifth, and sixth films - is seen as pretty boring on its own.
    • The third film is viewed as a decently funny movie in its own right, but nowhere near as good as the first.
  • Values Dissonance: The ending of the first film, which has Kid getting belt whipped off-screen by his father, shouldn't be funny at all and definitely wouldn't fly today; but as mentioned above, it's so over the top, you can't help but laugh at it.
