  • Alternate Aesop Interpretation: Word of God is that the movie is about Lewellen "overcoming" her rape, but the effect is not that. Rather, she becomes a much more wholesome character (including not being fixated on her body anymore) and generally looks like a better person, making it come off as Rape Portrayed as Redemption.
  • Narm:
    • Critics attacked the rape scene for being ridiculously over-the-top.
    • The scene when Lewellen's father gets struck by lightning was hilarious to a lot of people. Particularly how he is shot straight into the air and onto the ground from his tractor as it happens.
  • Overshadowed by Controversy: The movie is mostly known for its infamous Rape as Drama scene, which was filmed when Dakota Fanning was only twelve years old and garnered much controversy for having such a young actress perform a very adult scene. Even after Fanning explained the filming process (she actually filmed the scene alone and basically laid down as the camera was zoomed in on her face and made various facial reactions to portray emotional trauma), no one was able to let go of the controversy.
  • Retroactive Recognition: Yes, Grasshopper is Esther and Clove. This is, in fact, Isabelle Fuhrman's film debut.
  • So Okay, It's Average: Many people's opinion on the film - it's not a masterpiece, nor is it the bottom of the barrel for Fanning.
