YMMV / Helluva Boss S1E8 "Queen Bee"

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation:
    • Did Bee lose the drinking contest on purpose? And if so was it because she didn't want to egg Blitzø on any further when he was clearly already out of control? Or was it because she saw Loona was having a great time cheering on her Dad, and wanted to give her a chance to see her Dad score a big win before sending them both home? Given Bee's reaction however, it doesn't seem like she lost on purpose.
    • While one could make the argument that its simultaneously both, what was the true reason Bee asked Blitzø to leave? Did she mainly care for his well-being and didn't want someone who was coping hard at her party or did she not like him diminishing the fun and friendly mood of the party, therefore lessening her ability to feed off her guests' gluttony?
    • In her first introduction to Loona, was she really just a sort of guileless, rambling, innocently insensitive at worst, ditzy party girl, or was that her plausible cover as she made this new girl her boyfriend had taken up with superbly uncomfortable while reminding him that she had options?
  • Alternative Joke Interpretation: After chasing away Dennis, Blitzø demands a "Monica" or "Alejandro" which prompts a much larger imp to come over in hopes of scoring. Was the imp just looking for an easy lay or was Alejandro actually his name?
  • Awesome Music: "Cotton Candy", full stop. While Kesha didn't technically sing the song, she still co-wrote it and it shows. With its sugary sweet lyrics, energetic beat, and infectious melody, it's a heartwarming throwback to Kesha's early 2010s era dance hits.
  • Broken Base: Bee-Lzebub being a fox-bee hybrid instead of having the traditional fly motif, or at least not leaning further into the bee theme, wasn't welcome by a significant portion of fans, accusing Vivziepop of being biased to hounds, along with some finding her design too cluttered. Others really don't mind and find it an interesting interpretation.
  • Genius Bonus: The Gluttony Ring being a hang-out spot for hounds is a nod to The Divine Comedy which places Cerberus in the Circle of Gluttony.
  • Spiritual Successor: "Cotton Candy" serves as one to Vivziepop's "Die Young" music video from 2014. The fact that Bee is voiced by Kesha, who also co-wrote the character's theme song, makes the comparisons impossible to ignore.
  • Sweet Dreams Fuel: The somewhat somber ending aside, this is easily the most lighthearted, heartwarming and fun episode in Helluva Boss. "Cotton Candy" is a joyous song that will fill you with glee and Bee herself is just a ray of sunshine for her nice, wholesome Hard-Drinking Party Girl personality.
  • Visual Effects of Awesome: Bee's mane, tail, and torso are highly evocative of a lava lamp, with colors swirling and mixing and small bits of it breaking off, never looking the same in any two frames. And all of it was done by hand.
