  • Adorkable: Elwood is an utterly strange but absolutely lovely and infectiously likable guy.
  • Romantic Plot Tumor: We get occasional glimpses of a lovers spat between Dr. Sanderson and Nurse Kelly, but it's not very fleshed out, all that interesting or funny, nor does it add much to the plot outside of Elwood inadvertently helping people.
  • Tough Act to Follow: A remake has spent almost two decades in Development Hell (Steven Spielberg was slated to direct at one point). One reason why it hasn't been made is that the various stars who've been attached to the project (Tom Hanks, Will Smith, John Travolta) have worried that there was no possible way they could measure up to Jimmy Stewart's iconic performance.
  • Values Dissonance: While largely played for laughs, the treatment of the mentally ill leaves a lot to be desired. Dr. Sanderson and Mr. Wilson are extremely forceful in imprisoning Elwood and the entire staff outright call their patients "psychos and schizos".
  • Values Resonance: The core message of the play can be easily summed up as something like "It doesn't matter if people are a little strange if they're perfectly lovely, kind, decent people in every other aspect", which can easily be applied to all sorts of marginalized people but especially queer and neurodivergent people even to this day. Elwood is nothing but a totally Nice Guy throughout the story and eventually his family and the sanitarium workers realize that they've been mistreating a wonderful human being just because he has a six foot tall Pooka who may or may not be real for a friend, which really isn't worth getting so worked up about one way or another.
  • The Woobie: Elwood is the nicest guy around and yet all these people want to lock him up in a mental institution. But Elwood being Elwood, he really doesn't mind all that much.
