YMMV / Gundam Breaker

Go To

  • Older Than They Think: Some people assume that the Takuma Nagitsuji, the canon protagonist of Gundam Breaker 3, only made his formal debut in Gundam Breaker Battlogue OVA will be surprised to find out that the character was actually previously introduced in the manga adaptation of the game (though in the manga Takuma's hair was black compared to the silver in the ONA).
  • Narm: The second game's story is a fairly serious one, with bits and pieces from famous moments in the franchise. However, the seriousness is a bit undercut by the fact that you're piloting essentially giant toys, rather than actual Mobile Suits. A plot point actually revolves around the protagonist attaching an arm that was blown off an ally's Gunpla and using it to finish off one of the antagonists.
  • Scrappy Mechanic:
    • The original game has Weapon Affinities, wherein each individual part grants bonuses or penalties to certain types of weapons. The problem? It's based off of what the mecha uses in its home series, effectively limiting your builds to aping the source material. For example, the Zaku II has affinities for Machineguns, Bazookas, and Axes; if you want to use anything else, your damage output will plummet and you'll be forced to either suck it up or either waste valuable Module space on items to bolster your Affinities. When the sequel Gundam Breaker 2 was announced, the removal of Weapon Affinities was one of the first improvements Bandai Namco mentioned; instead, Head and Arm parts have Weapon Masteries that grant damage bonuses. While they still generally reflect what a machine uses in its home series, they can be changed with items, and there are no more penalties.
    • In a lesser example, all parts have a star rating (from 0 to 10) which determines their overall stats and are Random Drops. This results in lots of grinding and lots of Shop Fodder, as well as inflicting Complacent Gaming Syndrome since everyone tends to pick parts from only the most powerful machines (like those of the Strike Freedom and 00 Gundam/Raiser). Gundam Breaker 2 removes stars in favor of an Item Crafting system that lets players create and level parts as they choose, meaning that pretty much everything in the game can be viable if given enough work. It's entirely possible to battle the final boss with a GM armed with a beam spray gun that has the same firepower as the Wing Gundam Zero's Twin Buster Rifle and a beam saber as powerful as the Gundam Epyon's Hyper Beam Sword.
