  • Arc Fatigue: Many fans are tired of the Zoey/Luca/Aaron Love Triangle, due to the flip-flop throughout the seasons. With Zoey first mutually crushing on Aaron, then having feelings for Luca and starting a relationship with him, only to still have feelings for Aaron and got together with him ... only to break up and return to Luca halfway through. The fact it spans all four seasons is met with much disappointment.
    • And even once Zoey/Aaron seemed like they were on steady ground, they go ahead and break up again in the beginning of Season 6, but continue to clearly be hung up on each other.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: The pilot episode has Dre tearfully imploring Zoey to be careful, as college life is much more tempting than what it was like when he was a youth. While this was Played for Laughs, it becomes a lot less amusing as season 2 has Zoey being put on academic probation after getting caught cheating, and her father cuts her off financially.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: In the 16th episode of season 2, Jazz complains about Zoey’s coloring book activity, saying, "I did not miss the MLK parade to color some dumbass mermaids." Her sister had been cast in the role of Ariel in Disney's live action remake of The Little Mermaid just days prior to the episode's airing.
  • Nausea Fuel: The shot of Ana vomiting in the pilot.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: Ana and Aaron's political differences could have been an interesting source of conflict to explore while they were a couple and would have made for a far more compelling reason for their break-up.
  • Unintentionally Sympathetic:
    • Luca in Season 4, specifically when it came to the issue of Zoey's design being stolen by her fashion designer boss and then advertising it as her own completed project and line. Zoey considers calling her out, but refuses to do so on the basis that she's a woman of color. Despite the fact that it is heavily implied that she frequently screws over her employees, has done this many times in the past, and probably will do so again, as she gets no real punishment for her actions. And yet Luca's call-out of her is treated as unreasonable and selfish, ignoring the fact that despite Zoey's personal victory, it did nothing to solve the bigger issue.
    • Jazz when it comes to the breakup with her latest boyfriend in Season 4. Despite being open with dating a queer man, she shows hesitance when he shows up in a dress without a word to her beforehand, which causes her some distress upon the revelation. After taking some time to herself and realizing she can get out of her comfort zone because she still has those feelings of attraction. She slowly grows to accept and becomes willing to accept him, only to show hesitance again in showing off her partner in a dress, and asks him to not do so for the occasion due to her still needing time to adjust, to which he agrees with. The problem comes when he still arrives in a dress without any communication, accuses Jazz of not accepting all of him, and dumps her, which pushes aside the fact he both didn't talk to her openly as she did with him, and instead sprung things upon her twice without any notice and treated her like the bad guy. This gets downplayed as the final few episodes of season four show Jazz and Des talking again, indicting their romance may be rekindled.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: The whole cast can have moments where they are supposed to be perceived as sympathetic, but thanks to all of them partaking in rather shallow, petty, selfish actions, it can become hard to do as such.
