YMMV / Green Lantern: Beware My Power

Go To

  • Anti-Climax Boss: After being built up as the worst evil lantern-wielder across the galaxy, Sinestro is easily over-powered by a rookie John Stewart in a close-combat skirmish, then quickly replaced by the true antagonist with little fanfare. Not helping matters is that said character was one of the most deadly forces of the DC universe, yet gets brushed aside so quickly.
  • Complete Monster: Sinestro is a former member of the Green Lantern Corps and Hal Jordan's mentor before going rogue. Thriving on chaos and death, he and the Sinestro Corps instigated a bloody war between Rann and Thanagar by staging brutal false flag attacks. To prevent peace between the two sides, Sinestro sabotages Sardath's Zeta-Beam experiment, transporting Thanagar into Rannian space, upsetting both planet's ecosystems and causing millions of casualties, as well as restarting the war. Hoping to bend Hal to his will, Sinestro infects him with the Parallax entity before the two massacre the Guardians and the Green Lantern Corps. Having succeeded in corrupting Hal, Sinestro subsequently becomes his main acolyte in his efforts to destroy and remake the universe.
  • Continuity Lockout:
    • Green Arrow and Hal Jordan's close friendship has never been well known amongst non-comic readers, yet the movie expects viewers to be aware of their fellowship and crestfallen once Oliver is forced to put his evil former friend down.
    • If you've never seen DC Showcase: Adam Strange, then you will likely be confused who he is, how he got here, and why he's treated as a Living Legend among the galaxy. Inevitable when said character's importance stems from a Blu-Ray special featurette.
  • He's Just Hiding: Even the Other Wiki takes the position that Adam Strange may still be alive after his Heroic Sacrifice, and just got teleported elsewhere.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: The change to the Sinestro Corps symbol from its distinct comic design to a knock-off of the Green Lantern symbol has been criticized by fans for being a pointless change from the comics.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: The Corps was destroyed including several popular members, and considering how the Corps as a whole hasn't been used since Green Lantern: First Flight some feel killing them off so soon was a mistake. Hal being the villain got this reaction especially from fans, and some have said that this reveal might have had more impact if Hal had been in a previous film as a hero with Green Arrow (since their friendship isn't known to non-comic book readers who would likely expect Green Arrow to be friends with the Flash).
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot:
    • There are so many plotlines (the Corps being destroyed, the Rann-Thanagar war and the introduction of the Justice League) and characters introduced in this film, and many feel that in attempting to include them all they were left underdeveloped. Some feel that removing one of those would have given the film a chance to develop what remained.
    • Vixen, Hawkgirl, and John Stewart have no Love Triangle despite all appearing in the same movie and having romantic history with each other in past versions. But perhaps this was axed to prevent Romantic Plot Tumor.
  • Unexpected Character:
    • Absolutely nobody went in knowing Adam Strange was starring among the cast, let alone the same incarnation right out of his DC Showcase returning to aid the heroes in a mainstream movie.
    • While Martian Manhunter, Green Arrow, and Hawkgirl are all common Justice League members, it is a bit surprising to see Vixen appear as a charter member of the group over so many better known members..
