YMMV / Gravity Falls S2 E4 "Sock Opera"

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Bill implying his previous defeat was a case of I Let You Win. Was he being truthful, and pretended the twins and Soos had the upper hand? Or was he lying to confuse and discourage Dipper?
  • Epileptic Trees: Bill calling Grenda a monster sparked a lot of theories that Grenda was actually some sort of supernatural creature resuming human form. The theory got so big that Alex Hirsch actually heard about it, to which he firmly debunked it in the commentary.
Hirsch: Like, no, Bill is just a jerk. He's just calling people monsters 'cause he's an awful, awful character.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: The sole episode Bipper appears in, and he's only alluded to a few more times afterward, but the fans quickly turned him into a recognizable, frequently discussed character.
  • It Was His Sled: Besides Bill returning, the promos didn't really hint there would be anything super action-packed or exceptional from this episode. As such, Bill stealing Dipper's body came as a huge shock. Nowadays, Demonic Possession is usually the first thing people reference about Sock Opera, and with Bipper's Ensemble Dark Horse status, it's safe to say the plot point has become well-known.
  • Narm Charm: You'd think Bill using one of those goofy Dipper sock puppets to threaten the twins would make his point fall flat, but his words are so ominous and forbidding that the scene still works.
  • Squick: Gabe is last seen kissing his puppets. Dipper and Mabel even acknowledge it In-Universe.
Dipper: Did he just make out with his puppets?
Mabel: I might have dodged a bullet there...
