YMMV / Giselle

Go To

  • Fridge Brilliance: Giselle is sweet and forgiving enough to want Albrecht to live, but she has another excellent reason to save his life: if he dies, she will become a Wili and a damned soul. Only by saving him can she save herself.
  • Les Yay: While Giselle's love interests are the male Albrecht and Hilarion, she's enraptured by Bathilde's grace and fancy clothing, and Bathilde encourages her to dance despite her mother's warnings and even gives her a necklace.
  • Moral Event Horizon: It appears that the curse of the wilis only stays in effect if they had already danced a man to death; considering that Giselle's refusal to let Albrecht die on her first night with the wilis causes their spell over her to be broken and allows her to pass on, it's pretty clear that the other wilis have already crossed it before the start of the story. God only knows how many men they had murdered before they intercepted Hilarion...
  • Tear Jerker: The ending of Act 1, with Giselle's madness and death, Albrecht and Hilarion's reactions, and especially Berthe's reaction to her daughter's death.
  • Values Dissonance: In the original version of the ballet Giselle commits suicide with Albrecht's blade, explaining why she's buried in unhallowed ground where the Wilis can reach her. Later versions sanitised this element and had her die of a weak heart instead. So why is Giselle still buried in unhallowed ground? The implication is that the villagers think Albrecht seduced her. Either he did, or he never bothered to correct their assumption... which makes him a great deal less sympathetic, considering that in the time period of the story this would have ruined Giselle's life.
  • The Woobie: Giselle, oh Giselle.
