YMMV / Game of Thrones S6E4: "Book of the Stranger"

Go To

  • Alternate Character Interpretation:
    • Is Littlefinger really going off to help Sansa or does he just care about taking control of the North? Did he know what Ramsay was really like or is he going off specifically as payoff for what Ramsay did to Sansa? Or did he give Sansa to the Boltons on purpose so he can induce a Rescue Romance when he returns?
    • Concerning Tyrion's deal with the slaver cities, does he honestly believe they'll abide by the terms he set to gradually phase out slavery in seven years? Or is his proposition just meant to be a stalling tactic to weaken the Sons of the Harpy for a time while he awaits Daenerys' return and restores some semblance of order to Meereen?
    • Related to the above, are Missandei and Grey Worm correct in their assessment that Tyrion is in over his head and doesn't understand how the slave culture works? Or are their strong opinions about slavery and their naiveté about politics getting in the way of seeing reason?
    • Turns out their suspicions regarding the Masters were one hundred percent correct. Meaning while they were naive in the way of politics and dealing, they were more knowledgeable than Tyrion about the realities of the situation. So was Tyrion's insistence on diplomacy blind arrogance, foolishly believing because he was from Westeros it made him by definition smarter than the Masters or more experienced to understand the issues than Grey Worm and Missandei? Or an example of him reading the situation wrong due to him assuming it was a matter of money and not a matter of tradition?
  • Awesome Music: This particular variation of Daenerys' theme is special.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: George RR Martin has previously stated (such as in his DVD Commentary for "The Pointy End") that he was looking to increase Osha's role in the books after being impressed with the actress and wanting to give her more to do, which only makes watching her ignominious Back for the Dead scene after two seasons of being Put on a Bus even more depressing.
  • Heartwarming Moments: The opening where Sansa finally reunites with another member of her family, hell, the fact that any Stark has reunited with another, is sure to get you crying tears of joy.
  • Like You Would Really Do It: Osha's Hope Spot rings a little hollow to a viewer who knows Ramsay isn't going to go out like a chump a mere two episodes after taking control of Winterfell, let alone his multiple seasons of high-grade Plot Armor even beyond many other characters.
  • Moral Event Horizon: The khals were planning to gangrape Daenerys themselves and then let their horses do the same afterward. Fortunately, Daenerys outgambitted them.
  • Memetic Mutation: Brienne and Tormund shipping, typically superimposing their faces over recognizable romantic couples.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: Brienne's "revenge" on Stannis last season itself struck some viewers as petty and unheroic. Here she takes it further by taunting Davos and Melisandre about it, which is especially hypocritical since her own affinity for Renly, Catelyn, and Jaime is all founded solely on the same Because You Were Nice to Me as Davos's loyalty to Stannis.
