YMMV / Fushigi Yuugi: Byakko Senki

Go To

  • Iron Woobie: Both Kasaru and Karumu qualify as this, as two brothers whose once happy lives got ruined from one moment to another when their village was decimated and their parents, implied to have been Blue Blood or at least rich, were killed. And yet Kasaru has raised Karumu as well as possible and has done his best to reach for other people in trouble (like Suzuno and Neiran), while Karumu is a teasing Little Mister Snarker who rarely if ever mentions his and Kasaru's cruel past and tries not to burden his brother/father figure with his own bad feelings.
  • Jerk Ass Woobie: Neiran has led a truly horrid life, as those who have read Byakko Ibun already know, but she's not exactly justified in lashing out at people who want to help her but don't coddle her, or had done nothing wrong to her. Kasaru lampshades the trope when he says he feels like crap for her, but that he also can see the angry spirits of the people she's killed surrounding her.
  • Tear Jerker:
    • In the first part of the first chapter, Suzuno asks her father Takao when "Taki-neesama" will come to see her. Takao can't bring himself to tell her that Takiko is dead.
    • The second part is made of this, as it features the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 and its consequences in-story: Tokyo is destroyed, the Ohsugi home collapses, Suzuno's mother Tamayo is crushed to death by the rubble, and the fatally wounded Takao uses his last bits of life to send Suzuno into the Universe for protection...
  • The Woobie: Where to start with Suzuno, since the first chapter of the manga pretty much shatters her up-until-then happy life?
