• Follow the Leader: Friend Request followed the trend of (then) recent internet-themed thrillers, like #Horror, The Den, and Bad Match. It especially drew comparisons to Unfriended, due to both films having plot elements focusing on Facebook, bullying, suicide, and vengeful ghosts. Some people even referred to Friend Request as "that other Facebook movie".
• Hollywood Homely: Marina is regarded by Laura's friends as ugly and scary-looking. In truth, she has a perfectly normal, even attractive face; she's just a bit pale and unkempt (particularly her hair, which is unwashed and sparse from Trichotillomania) and hides her face under a hoodie (which isn't a terribly odd sight on a college campus in the first place).
