Creator / Sidney Gilliat and Frank Launder

The creative team of Frank Launder (January 28, 1906-February 23, 1997) and Sidney Gilliat (February 15, 1908-May 31, 1994) made such a huge contribution to over three decades of British cinema. They were extraordinarily prolific, with over a hundred films featuring either Launder or Gilliat in their credits. Although they wrote some of the wittiest screenplays in British cinema history, as directors, were rarely more than competent. But they also made superb films, both as entertainment and as fascinating reflections of the culture that produced them.
