YMMV / Fraggle Rock The Movie

Go To

  • Awesome Moments: Let's face it; the idea of baby Jake having to learn how to be a grownup by himself is very impressive in of itself.
  • Awesome Music: Imagine Dragons' cover of "Let Me Be Your Song" that plays during the credits.
    • Sia's cover of "Follow Me", also during the credits.
  • Heartwarming Moments: The relationship between Jake and Red is this in itself; after hearing about his tragic upbringing, Red positions herself as Jake's best friend/Morality Chain, and not once in the film does she tease him about anything like she usually does to other characters (except if in a playful manner, of course). Red accompanies Jake through the whole journey to find his dad's killer, and is the one to stop Jake from committing suicide via communicating into his thoughts. Despite being a Fraggle, Red understands very quickly that Jake does not have anyone (besides only three fellow high school students) who truly supports him, and he might do something that could put himself (or others) in danger if he doesn't have someone to point him in the right direction.
  • He Really Can Act: All of the Muppet performers give it their all here, but Karen Prell's performance as Red Fraggle is probably the biggest standout in the cast. Not only does Prell nail Red's cheerful energy and playful affection throughout the whole film, but also her moments of sadness and sympathy; during Red's performance of "Smile", you can hear Prell struggling not to break character and cry.
    • Andy Hayward and Ryan Dillon, the performers of Wembley Fraggle and Sprocket, respectively, do uncanny impressions of their original performer, Steve Whitmire, to the point where, when the official trailer was released on YouTube, commenters were almost convinced that Whitmire had returned to play Wembley.
  • Ho Yay: When Jake first meets Red, he asks her if there are others of her species. Red replies yes, and that she has four best friends. When she gets to Mokey:
Red: Oh, Mokey... She's just...so gentle, so creative, so...so gorgeous...
Jake: Uh... Do you, like, have a...crush on her?
    Red: What's a crush?
Jake: It's basically someone you love or admire very much. Usually, you have strong, romantic feelings for them.
Red: Then, I would say...yes, I do have a crush on Mokey. Just don't tell anyone, okay?
  • Moral Event Horizon: In spite of his Laughably Evil tendencies, Mr. Frith is truly a nasty, cruel, dangerous individual with no qualms about killing teenagers. And at no point in the film is that more apparent than when he drives Jake to kill himself, even saying that the world will be a happier place without him.
    • At high school, Jake is often picked on by bullies, who torment him for having no one to stick up for him. But it's not anything they do at school that makes them cross the MEH; it's when they reveal themselves to be working for Mr. Frith just to spite Jake and his friends (and, to Frith's credit, he does treat them well, albeit in a twisted way). At the film's end, the bullies are expelled from school and arrested on charges of conspiracy to commit genocide. When Nate calls them out on their betrayal, the lead female bully channels Lionel Barrymore in It's a Wonderful Life with her response:
Nate: I thought you all were human! Mean, cruel, sadistic people, but still human. Why?!
Lead Bully: To be honest, we've always seen you losers as worth more dead than alive. Actually, scratch that—you're all still worthless even when you are dead!
  • Tear Jerker: When Jake finally confronts Mr. Frith, he learns that this is the man who killed his father many years ago. Upon hearing this, Jake breaks into tears, not helped at all by Frith taunting him by telling him that he (Jake) was never truly loved by anyone. Jake is so broken by this that he pulls out a gun and prepares to shoot himself.
    • Before he can, he hears the voice of Red Fraggle crooning "Smile" to prevent him from taking his own life. The already bittersweet words of the song become devastating in this particular context ("You'll find that life is still worthwhile/If you just smile..."). Hearing Red, Fraggle Rock's resident Genki Girl, on the verge of tears, trying desperately to convince Jake not to pull the trigger, is brutal!
    • Hell, Jake's backstory in particular. Imagine just being born, when the woman giving birth to you dies, and your father then leaves you and never returns, and then having to lose your home because you're still too young to pay the bills. On top of all that, you end up making very few friends and the man who murdered your father is now a businessman looking to destroy the United States.
    • The dedication to Doc actor Gerry Parkes at the credits' end.
  • The Woobie: Poor, poor Jake. First, he loses his family and home as a baby, then he's stuck with very few school friends, and then he finds out that the man threatening to destroy America was the murderer of his father.
    • Iron Woobie: Jake. He's suffered through so much and yet, he carries on with life. Pessimistically, of course, but he still finds a reason to live every day.
