YMMV / 50 Ways to Die in Minecraft

  • Awesome Moments:
  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • Death 41 ("Blasphemy", i.e. being struck by lightning after writing out 'NOTCH SUX' with blocks) in Part 1 becomes a lot less funny after Notch's controversial social media antics after leaving Mojang caused him to become a much more controversial figure among the game's fanbase, along with the current development team generally distancing themselves from him.
    • While it can also be Hilarious depending on your viewpoint, Death 17 in part 4 ended up becoming this as Nintendo has started becoming more strict with their IPs, having many popular fangames, mods, and web animations either taken down or cancelled.
  • Heartwarming Moments: For the Halloween Edition, we have Jake Eye's unsolicited promotion for Tony's Chocolonley, a chocolate making company that aims to remove the slave labor factor found in most chocolate brands. While it's adorable to hear Jake endorsing their business "like they mailed [him] a platinum statue of KeiferMCnote  getting torn apart by grizzly bears", it's also very nice of Jake to spread awareness of the slave-chocolate situation and slave-free alternatives to what we'd normally eat, even if they never reached out to him for sponsorship opportunities.
  • He Really Can Act: Despite not having voice acting roles in any other project, Jake Eyes does an excellent job at sounding like different people throughout the series despite being the only main voice actor, and he makes great use of pitch-shifting and other filters to aid in doing so.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • Death 29 in Part 2 happens when BlondWolfGirl/PawsterMom tries to sing "Happy Birthday" to her dog, leading to her getting shot by the police for violating copyright law. The song was later released into the public domain a few months later.
    • Part 3, Death 41 is the Titanic being struck by an iceberg after the captain, RedstoneNed, says "there are no icebergs in Minecraft". Icebergs were added to Minecraft a year and a half later with the Aquatic Update.
    • Death 47 in the Fairy Tale edition has Mickey being unable to sue Jake Eyes for using Pinocchio because the original story is in the public domain. Mickey's classic version from Plane Crazy would become public domain in 2024.
  • Nightmare Fuel:
    • The thumbnails of some of the videos can be quite unsettling. They include a dimly lit human corpse with a toe tag, a rusty guillotine in a foggy city square, and a pair of scissors cutting a Thread of Life, which resembles a blood-red artery.
    • The Springtrap jump scares in Parts 3 and 7, one of which is a Bait-and-Switch with such a loud scream that Jake Eyes had to assure the audience that he'd lowered the volume of it by several decibels in a reupload.
    • In the "Forgotten Fables" video, which shows off deleted scenes from the "Fairy Tale" episode, jayRiott wishes from a genie to be the funniest man on the internet, resulting in him finding himself so funny that he dies of laughter. In what Jake Eyes himself referred to as a subversion of his usual style, this death is portrayed as much more slow and terrifying than other deaths in the series, with the screen growing dark and jayRiott audibly attempting to gasp for air during his uncontrollable fit of laughter, which ends in his death.
    • The Cineadversary's loss to Rich's cackle is a definite ball of this. Sure, the guy definitely had it coming for the sheer amount of casualties caused by his incessant cackling, but the shockwaves from Rich's laughter slowly tears him apart. We get to see the skin start peeling off, then his muscles, and even his eyes start breaking apart until Jeremy is completely erased. This might be the goriest Jake Eyes has ever gotten, and he did not hold anything back.
  • Special Effect Failure:
    • In Part 3, Death 17, Stu is holding a sword in his right hand and a shield in his left hand, when he swaps the shield for a torch, places the torch, and gives a skeleton the opportunity to shoot him. When Stu places the torch, one can clearly see that his right hand (with the sword) is making the block-placing motion.
    • In the trailer for part 16, Ned and Norman are playing Super Smash Bros. Melee together while talking. However, only Captain Falcon is displayed as being controlled by a person. Ness, on the other hand, is a computer player, despite ostensibly being controlled by Ned or Norman.
  • Tear Jerker: A death from the Fairy Tale edition that was mentioned in the "Forgotten Fables" video has BlondWolfGirl kill herself by jumping into a lava pit after hearing the tale of the Steadfast Tin Soldier (known as one of the most heartwrenching fairy tales ever made). Unlike death 8 from Part 3 and death 38 in the Halloween edition, this moment is not played for laughs. Even Jake himself found this way too dark "even for a series about people getting killed over and over again", and he ended up scrapping it.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: The pitched down audio in the re-uploads, since the quality gets so garbled the song becomes difficult to recognise. This is in no way Jake's fault, as this was the only way to avoid copyright claims on the music, and he has expressed how much he disliked having to pitch the audio down, as most of its usage complied with fair use. His fans tend to agree. The versions on Dailymotion were left unaltered, though.
  • Visual Effects of Awesome:
    • Some of the builds in the series can be quite elaborate, even if they're only in a shot for a couple of seconds. Also, some of the in-game items used to form makeshift objects not in the base game can be very creative, such as fishing coolboxes made out of a block of lapis lazuli and a block of redstone topped with snow to form a lid, or a computer being made of a block of steel with a painting on the front for a monitor, an anvil for the computer itself, a button for the mouse and a powered rail for a keyboard.
    • From something simple as a windmill spinning or explosions that aren’t the traditional Minecraft explosions, these are very notable as such things are animated in stop-motion. Just look at this death.
