• Unintentional Period Piece: Basil reading Peter Benchley's Jaws at the height of its popularity. Now, the book has been totally eclipsed by the film released in the same year as the episode, 1975.
• Values Dissonance: When Manuel collapses on the floor from a bad hangover, Basil gets on the floor with him to try to pick him up at various angles. The couple–who are under the impression that Basil and Manuel are gay–quietly deride them as being "disgusting." That kind of casual homophobia would definitely not fly today and would paint the otherwise innocent lovebirds as unsympathetic bigots.
