YMMV / Faust: The Seven Games of the Soul

Go To

  • Angst? What Angst?: Bizarrely, despite most of Chapter 7 revolving around the bond between Mephisto and Giselle and showing how far Mephisto was willing to go to make her happy, the game doesn't show his reaction to Frank using her skin to make his art, with only the manual from his perspective saying that the thought Frank had turned her body from a monstrosity to a "masterpiece", but it still begs the question about whether or not Mephisto knew all along that this would happen, or if his opinion on Frank was changed at all by this.
  • Awesome Music: The soundtrack is a collection of mostly mid-20th century jazz, blues, and big band tracks like "Dreamsville" by Sarah Vaughan and "Worried Life Blues" by John Lee Hooker (with one outlier being a 90's rock song called "Far, Far Away from My Heart" by the band Presence) and they do a lot of heavy lifting for the atmosphere to convey a nostalgic, yet melancholy feeling throughout.
  • Narm: Frank’s red photography room, where the sounds of many women moaning and screaming fill the air, would be a lot creepier if some of the screaming weren’t very overused stock sound effects.
  • Took the Bad Film Seriously: Whether one considers this game to be bad depends on your tolerance for the patchy storytelling and difficult puzzles, but the voice actor Geoffrey Bateman’s performance as Mephisto has been universally lauded even by those who disliked Faust overall for being able to portray a demonic character who has grown weary of his position as a tempter, but can still be intimidating, funny, and even sweet.
  • Unintentional Uncanny Valley: As demonstrated by the 2D portraits of various characters seen throughout, the artists were going for a stylized cartoony look with somewhat exaggerated proportions, but the chunky mo-capped 3D models don’t execute that well and end up looking like misshapen rag dolls.
