• Complete Monster: Professor Shinigami, real name Dr. Shimura, was a sadistic Serial Killer of women in life who kept the bodies of his victims in suspended animation before being supposedly killed. Returning as an entity capable of murdering people through their dreams, Shimura returns to old habits by butchering countless more young women in their sleep and even trying to torture the young daughter of the cop who tried to gun him down to death in revenge. When Rem plunges into his victim's dreams to fight him, Shinigami eagerly attempts to kill her too through a swinging axe to slowly cut her open and bleed her out.
• Les Yay: Rem/Elizabeth.
• Narm: It's relatively easy to spot the parts of the first episode where sexual content was removed, if anything due to the obvious Naughty Tentacles setup.
• Nightmare Fuel: This being an anime about dreams, it's loaded with Nightmare Fuel. And let's not get started on Rem deteriorating into a skeleton, or her being graphically impaled on multiple long spikes...
• Values Dissonance: Being such a gleeful product of The '80s, the series entertains a long list of points that would not fly today: the empowered protagonist wears campy Stripperiffic attire, at one point advises a girl to find a boyfriend not to feel lonely (and kisses her completely out of the blue), later finds a perverted PE teacher that is completely Played for Laughs, and has two grown men in love with her despite being implied to be a high-schooler or so.
