YMMV can't be "averted"

* ContinuityLockOut: Averted, along with "Before the Flood". For absolute newcomers or casual viewers, this episode manages to cover off nearly all the basics needed to understand how ''Doctor Who'' works, from paradoxes and time travel, to the Doctor-companion dynamic and there's even a line of dialogue that explains why the TARDIS is bigger on the inside.

* LikeYouWouldReallyDoIt: The {{Cliffhanger}} and Part Two trailers suggest not only that the Doctor will perish for good and become another ghost but also that it's a fate he can't avoid, a fixed point. But this guy has his name right in the show's title; he'll find a way to say ScrewDestiny. Like "The Magician's Apprentice" the cliffhanger is more how he will survive rather than if. (To be fair, this can apply to every cliffhanger ever involving the Doctor, given the name of the series.)

* ShipTease: The episode is loaded with tiny moments between the Doctor and Clara. One moment that fans have pointed out occurs when the Doctor tells Clara (for the first time this season) that he feels he has a duty of care towards her. Prior to doing so, he is seen holding his right hand in an unusual, unnatural manner. This scene occurs soon after it is established that the Doctor thinks he has deleted American Sign Language from his memory though he actually signs "You're beautiful" to Cass without meaning to; the way the Doctor holds his hand in the TARDIS scene has been identified as being ''almost'' identical to the ASL sign for "I love you."

Added Ship Tease in part because there is a "see Ship Tease in YMMV" throw in the main but nothing here

* ShipTease: In interviews promoting Series 9, both Creator/PeterCapaldi and Creator/JennaColeman acknowledged a romance of sorts existed between Clara and the Doctor, but that it was usually expressed through looks and what is unsaid, especially when the other wasn't looking. This episode is considered a prime example of this as throughout Clara and the Doctor can be seen gazing at each other with affection in a way that becomes noticeable. Clara's response to the Doctor suggesting she find another relationship has also been interpreted (in concert with her FreakOut in the next episode) as her indicating the Doctor is her next relationship. (Since this is still left to interpretation, this example of a straight trope is being listed under YMMV.)
** A number of fans familiar with sign language have indicated that the Doctor claims to have forgotten sign language, but in fact signs an actual, complimentary phrase to Cass when he means to say something else. Later in the episode, when talking to Clara and expressing his "duty of care" he makes an unusual gesture with his right hand which has been identified as sign language for "I love you." (Again, this is in YMMV as it's just as possible Peter Capaldi coincidentally held his right hand in the correct position during a scene featuring a line of dialogue that in a later episode becomes a euphemism for a LoveConfession.)
** Also in the above scene, when the Doctor says Clara needs to find a new relationship and a new hobby, the direction of the scene has the camera hold on Clara who does not reply immediately, hinting that she has in fact found a new relationship, only he doesn't realize it. This is bookended two episodes later when Clara confirms that the Doctor is her hobby.
* WeAllLiveInAmerica: Listed here as it's audience reaction - some American fans accused the show of using meaningless gibberish gestures instead of real sign language for Cass. They didn't realise that although the spoken language in both the USA and the UK is English, British Sign Language and American Sign Language are very different and not mutually comprehensible.

* {{Narm}}: Once Pritchard becomes the third ghost, he advances on the group menacingly...or at least he ''would'' if he weren't brandishing a plastic chair. Admittedly it probably could do some damage if it actually hit someone, but the way he's holding it just looks daft. [[Series/BeingHumanUK WHO WANTS SOME OF MY CHAIR?!?]]
