YMMV / Die Nibelungen

Go To

  • Even Better Sequel: The second part, Kriemhild's Revenge, is considered superior to the first part. This is mostly because of how different it is in tone, being Darker and Edgier and completely doing away with the supernatural aspects of Siegfried.
  • Genre Turning Point: This was the first large-scale fantasy epic.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Fritz Lang dedicated this movie to the German people in the opening credits, which becomes a lot more depressing when one considers that Lang, who has a Jewish background, would later leave Germany after the Nazis took over.
  • Too Bleak, Stopped Caring: Die Nibelungen is perhaps Lang's darkest, bleakest and most depressing movie. Which is saying something.
  • Values Dissonance: Audiences of the 1920’s probably saw Siegfried battling the dragon as a Knight in Shining Armor confronting an evil beast while modern audiences would probably perceive it as a Egomaniac Hunter attacking an animal that is minding its own business.
