YMMV / Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Cabin Fever

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Did Manny actually want his family to die, or did he only want them to be incovenienced and, due to his young age, didn't realise that the lack of electricity during the blizzard would kill them?
  • Anvilicious: This book seems to really really be giving one the point that Jeff Kinney hates the American education system.
  • Contested Sequel: Cabin Fever is either liked for its more serious and realistic tone, while still having some very funny jokes, while others find it irredeemable because of Manny's despicable behavior and dislike that the snowstorm doesn't start until the end of the book.
  • It Was His Sled: Pretty much everyone knows about the infamous ending of the book, where Manny is revealed to have nearly killed his entire family by letting them freeze to death.
  • Never Live It Down: Manny's actions in the climax, which nearly caused Greg, Rodrick, and his mother to freeze to death, followed by his lack of punishment. No matter how Out of Focus he becomes, nobody will ever forgive him.
  • Nightmare Fuel: The picture of Alfrendo on page 188. It depicts a waterlogged baby doll with a missing eye, and parts of its body have been chewed away, exposing metal wire.
  • Slow-Paced Beginning: One of the main reasons why the book is a Contested Sequel is because the plot with the snowstorm doesn't happen until the end of the book. After said snowstorm, however, the book quickly picks up the pace.
  • Too Bleak, Stopped Caring: The ending of this book, wherein Manny's Jerkass tendencies are taken up to eleven as he cuts off the power to the house in the middle of a blizzard with the exception of his own room, leaving the rest of his family to die and yet he still doesn't get punished, is seen as one of the lowest points of the series.
  • Unintentional Period Piece: Greg plays a Webkinz-like game. It's very hard to get the reference if you're unfamiliar with Webkinz, which was at the height of its popularity in the mid-to-late 2000s.
