- Alternative Character Interpretation: Is Karma just a psychopathic Straw Fan, or does he actually have a point?
- Harsher in Hindsight: A Batgirl backup story in issue #491 had a small girl witnessing what she thought was Batgirl's murder; the trauma left her with a case of hysterical paralysis which Barbara felt responsible for. Come The Killing Joke...
- Newer Than They Think: Detective Comics didn't become a purely Batman title until much later than people realise. The first time it became entirely dedicated to the Batfamily was with issue #384, published in late 1968. Even after it moved away from its original anthology format, throughout most of The Silver Age of Comic Books it had a backup feature starring the Martian Manhunter and then the Elongated Man.
- Values Dissonance: The first issue suffers from some rather unfortunate racist stereotyping common for the time period, featuring flaccid Fu Manchu-esque Chinese caricatures as the villains.
