YMMV / Deep Blue Sea 3

Go To

  • Cry for the Devil: The sharks are still dangerous and predatory, but they inspire more sympathy than the sharks from the first two movies. They've been experimented on relentlessly and hunted across the ocean. Their mother is killed early on and they're drawn to the signal from her electronic tracer even while understanding on some level that she's dead. One of them is captured and tortured with electric shocks and the other two try to rescue their brother and clearly recognize when his life is being threatened to make them back off.
  • Fridge Brilliance: This film's survivor gender count fits it perfectly for the overall survivor count from all three films: two men from the first, two men and a woman from the second and three from the third - making eight people in total, 4 males and 4 females.
  • Heartwarming Moments: Sally. For a franchise centering around killer sharks, Sally, a great white shark (ie the villain of many a movie) is portrayed in a super positive light. Not only does she save Emma from one of the villains, she also survives the entire movie. While the music in her first appearance is tense, the music in her final appearance is serene and beautiful.
    • One could say that Sally's rescue of Emma was indirect due to her attacking the villain who was bleeding and that may be, but her final shot in the movie makes it looks like she's checking in on Emma before she leaves.
  • Moral Event Horizon: Lucas starts as a Punch-Clock Villain who seems less callous and hypocritical than his superior. Then it's revealed that he's planted a mine to blow up the village and everyone in it along with the sharks. He follows this up with a smug speech about how he doesn't care one bit about the scientific advances the sharks brains can bring to humanity, saying that the only important thing is protecting the stock price of the company that let the sharks escape.
  • Nightmare Fuel: The last bull shark spreading its jaws open so wide to the point that its gums are showing as it attempts to bite Emma, seconds before it explodes due to the compactor crushing.
    • While he is a villain, Schill's screams as he's being carried off by Sally are unsettling, especially as you hear them fading off in the distance, where you get a nice view of Sally shaking him apart in a bloody mess.
    • Emma having to rescue Richard from the jaws one of the sharks. The shark had slammed into Richard to bite, luckily not biting down so hard due to a sedative kicking into it. Richard however still finds himself in the shark's jaws and the unconscious shark sinks to the bottom of the ocean with him. Emma has to pry its jaws open to get him out.
  • Retroactive Recognition:
  • Surprisingly Improved Sequel: Initial reviews state that it is better than Deep Blue Sea 2. As of now, Rotten Tomatoes tomatometer for the 3rd film a 67%, making it the highest rated of the films - the first film having a 60% while the second has a whopping 0%.
  • Visual Effects of Awesome: Despite being a direct-to-video shark film, the movie's special effects are actually pretty decent for the most part(though there are a few hiccups). At some points, the CG sharks are more convincing than the digital sharks from the first.
