YMMV / David Copperfield (1993)

Go To

  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Murdstone is easily the most memorable character in the cast, helped by Michael York's performance that makes him equal parts hammy and equal parts threatening.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Murdstone's cheese factory and cheese-related schemes are rather similar to those of Murdstone's Expy Mr. Benevolent in Bleak Expectations.
  • Moral Event Horizon: If Murdstone hadn't already crossed it with the way he treats his workers (and even threatening his closer allies with making their children child laborers), he flies over it by not giving Clara Davey's letters, thus worsening her condition, and refusing to let Clara see a doctor until it's too late to save her.
    • Meanwhile, Grimby crosses it when he helps Murdstone push David and Agnes off the waterfall.
  • Narm: When Murdstone is menacing Davey with a cheese gun and ranting about how no one will ever take away his factory. It's hilarious.
  • Shout-Out: Mealy's appearance is remarkably similar to Dodger from Oliver & Company.note  In addition, both characters theme songs are about being street smart.
  • So Bad, It's Good: Pretty much the whole movie. To even compare it to the novel it was based on is laughable.
  • Spiritual Successor: As an adaptation of a classic story told with anthropomorphic animals with a lion playing the role of the main antagonist, this is for all intents and purposes a spiritual successor to Robin Hood (1973). Davey also portrayed Robin Hood during the song "I'll be your hero".
  • Viewer Species Confusion: Though he too is a cat, the Duke's beard and mustache cause him to look rather lion-like himself, causing the mistaken impression he is a white lion.
