  • Is John a Shell-Shocked Veteran who is suffering an existential crisis from living in the last days of humanity or is he a self-absorbed asshole who is barely any better than the monsters he fights? Both?
  • Is Mercury a victim of circumstance forced into a job she hates or a monster who is a Karma Houdini that escaped the consequences of her actions by fleeing New Arkham?
• Escapist Character: John is a superpowered post-apocalyptic cowboy that seems to have no end of beautiful capable women attracted to him.
• Genius Bonus: The Rangers are often interchangeably referred to a squad and squadron. This makes no sense until you remember they're a military force descended from soldiers living on an Air Force Base.
• Surprisingly Improved Sequel: The Tower of Zhaal is considered to be a better novel than the original by a significant amount.
