- Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: A bizarre dance number between a Mexican storekeeper and a drag queen (Ru Paul), witnessed by a completely baffled Troy.
- Designated Villain: Tony Eyes, who's the one seen as the bad guy in the Carmichaels' eyes even though their children were the ones throwing trash in their property and vandalizing it regularly overall.
- Harsher in Hindsight: There's some argument between Carolyn and the children to which Clinton angrily says "I'd rather have a father than a mother any day." Which would unfortunately really come back to bite him later in the movie.
- Strawman Has a Point: Tony Eyes can be unpleasant, loud, and annoying but he does have a point in that Carmicheal children have been just as unpleasant, as they have thrown trash on his property and did throw rocks on his dogs (we do see this in something of a cutaway), which makes them just unpleasant neighbors to him, as he is they.
- Tear Jerker: Carolyn's death and the clips shown after set to, "Ain't No Sunshine", emphasizing her absence. Thankfully for the audience’s sake, we do get to see her in the flesh in the closing moments of the film as an angel who still visits Troy.
- Viewer Gender Confusion: You'd be forgiven if you thought RuPaul was actually a woman vs playing one in drag.
