YMMV / Class S01E01 "For Tonight We Might Die"

  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: The Doctor seeing Clara Oswald's name and reacting to it out of Wistful Amnesia is one in the context of this episode and series, given that a) it is not explained for the benefit of viewers who are unfamiliar with Doctor Who (or recent story arcs), b) it is not explained to any of the characters either, and c) it is never referenced again in any remaining scenes of the episode, nor in any subsequent episodes of the series.
  • Continuity Lock-Out: As indicated under Big-Lipped Alligator Moment, above, the significance of the name "Oswald, C." to the Doctor, which is treated as a major dramatic moment, is completely lost on any newcomers, even as it is tied to the Doctor saying, "Time never forgets," which was a line of dialogue used to promote the series. The episode makes no attempt at explaining the moment to viewers.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: Many fans only watched the episode because the Twelfth Doctor made a guest appearance. It was brief, but he did steal the spotlight while he was there. While some fans watched the rest of the show, many others tuned out after the first episode either out of lack of interest or because the show was too sexual and violent. This is reflected in the BBC One ratings that saw a marked drop off between the first and second episodes.
  • Narm: Not only is Tanya's line about failing the Bechdel Test cringeworthy, it comes across as forced and unnatural. Worse, that’s not even how the Bechdel Test actually works.
  • Pandering to the Base: One of her very first lines of dialogue is Tanya gleefully declaring, "We just failed The Bechdel Test!" to April, with zero context on what that is for those not in the know. For better or for worse, this show knows that it's aimed squarely at the sizeable Tumblr fandom of Doctor Who. Unfortunately, it just contributed to the Broken Base instead.
