YMMV / Chrome (Band)

Go To

  • Audience-Alienating Era: The post-Helios, Damon-only era is derided by critics and fans as a cheap imitation of the band, being repetitive Synth-Pop sorely lacking in riffs or Helios' charisma. Even Helios admitted in interviews that Chrome without him wasn't very good, though he respected Damon enough to finish some of his recordings after his death for Angel of the Clouds.
  • Awesome Music:
    • You'd have an easier time listing their not-mind-blowing (heyday) songs. There's a reason Julian Cope considers "TV As Eyes" to be his favourite album-opener.
    • The 2012 single "PROPHECY" returns the band to their circa-1979 style, sounding like if Half Machine Lip Moves was recorded in a proper studio as opposed to Damon's living room. Probably one of Helios' best songs in years as well.
    • Fans and critics alike raved over Feel it Like a Scientist, the band's 2014 comeback.
  • Epic Riff: Helios was inspired by the likes of Black Sabbath, Psychedelic Rock and Punk Rock, so practically every riff was this. Basically anything from Half Machine Lip Moves, Blood on the Moon, Third from the Sun, and Feel it Like a Scientist, plus "Danger Zone".
  • Fanon Discontinuity: Fans generally ignore the albums without Helios. That includes The Visitation and anything between Chronicles and Retro Transmission.
  • Nightmare Fuel: Their music was the more happily crazy cousin to Throbbing Gristle, so it's plenty nightmarish.
  • Posthumous Popularity Potential: Fans and listeners were more forgiving towards Damon's post-Helios music after his death. They still prefer the records with Helios, though.
  • Signature Song: "TV As Eyes", "Meet You in the Subway", and/or "Firebomb".
