• Values Dissonance: It's clear that Diane is meant to be seen as childish and immature for grieving over the death of her cat, with the viewer at most invited to pity how pathetic she is. 40 years later, as more and more people come to view pets as valued members of their family and, in effect, their own children, Diane's reaction - though characteristically overwrought - is completely understandable and everybody else at the bar seems shockingly callous and disrespectful.
