  • Alternative Character Interpretation:
    • Was Feng Wushuang really so innocent and naive as to be blind to the war going on around her and the issues she was causing? Or was she just so selfish that the problems others faced because of her didn't register with her as long as she was able to stay with Jing Chen and Bai Lixuan? In the story itself, she claims to be unaware that Bai Lixuan had murdered people as she had not seen the bodies, but Su Lüxia points out that as a cultivator, she has senses beyond a normal human's and there were a number of signs she should have noticed. Feng Wushuang argues that she had been sick at the time and thus couldn't have been aware, but it's questionable how true that is and it's clear that Su Lüxia doesn't believe her. Out of all the rivals Su Lüxia has dealt with, Feng Wushuang seems the least malicious or at least displays the least harmful intentions in her actions. She doesn't try to hurt anyone, she just seems ignorant to the consequences and the implications of what she does. Given how a lot of her acts are out of love for both her master and her demon friend, it could be argued that this is a case of Love Makes You Dumb.
    • Is Jing Chen truly a good man making the best of a bad situation or a Magnificent Bastard who has plotted everything from the beginning? Were his actions for the destruction of the demon clan and ultimate good of the world or were they born out of a sense of detachment as the world around him isn't "real" and thus its people aren't worth caring about? Was he truly only using Feng Wushuang from the start or was there a point where he did actually care about her before realizing that even that was something forced on him by the story? Did he plan the tragedies that Feng Wushuang caused or did he just take advantage of them in the moment? Jing Chen is one of the more complex characters of the series. He is a Taoist master in an unfinished second-rate novel and is supposed to be a pillar of dignity and good, but due to the instability of the world he's in on account of being left unfinished, he starts to gain more awareness of just how wrong things are, including this "role" he was meant to fill and even the emotions he has felt up until that point. Thus, he is seeking a means of escape regardless of the price to the people around him as they don't seem "real" to him. Does this make him a Complete Monster or a sympathetic person trying to escape a life he was literally written into despite his own wishes?
  • Ho Yay: Qi Ling grows very attached to Su Lüxia while living together, going from distrusting and disdaining her just because she's a ghost to being willing to sacrifice herself to protect her despite her belief that 'Xiao Xia' is a weak spirit who won't last long anyway. Even after learning that she was being deceived all along, she still tries to defend Su Lüxia despite her own injuries, and after the final battle she tearfully asks if their entire relationship was a lie. On Su Lüxia's end, she compromises her own safety (as staying in a small world when System maintenance begins will negate her immortality) to stay with Qi Ling and complete the mission, and out of all her admirers (including her own son), Qi Ling is the only one she invites to leave the small world and come find her.
  • Hollywood Homely: Without her System or the superficial affection of men, Kawana Nanako loses her stunning beauty and regains her original looks. Her original face is still rather pretty with the largest difference being her freckles, but everyone around her reacts as if she's a hideous monster. On the other hand Lüxia mentions that she could be successful again as long as she was willing to use all her skills so Nanako might be suffering from the side effects of hiding out in dirty alleyways surrounded by trash.
  • Jerkass Woobie: Arguably Feng Wushuang from the sixth arc. She was simply Born Unlucky and brought misfortune to everyone around her regardless of her intentions, resulting in the death of her family and leaving her an orphan before Jing Chen took her in. While she doesn't mean any harm and bears no ill will in most of her actions, she cannot help but attract trouble wherever she goes, and anything she attempts to do ends up going wrong. She suffers an unrequited love towards Jing Chen, whom it is revealed only sees her as a tool and uses her as a means to help weaken and kill the other man she loves, who is also the only one who loves her. Jing Chen admits he never loved her, then destroys her cultivation as punishment for the betrayal that he manipulated her into committing, making her powerless and causing her to age rapidly. By the end of the arc, she is left as an old woman begging on the streets and completely alone. This is one of the worse fates Su Lüxia has left a rival to, especially since among all her opponents, Feng Wushuang's actions were out of naïve selfishness and ignorance rather than malice and greed. On the other hand, her betrayal led to the deaths of many of her sect members, something she doesn't really care about, showing her total lack of empathy for anyone who isn't a love interest.
