  • Growing the Beard: While they had managed to gain a moderate following by The Diseased and the Poisoned, the general opinion of them was that they were a poor man's Suicide Silence that did precious little to stand out; as per Cory Arford, the band was acutely aware of this, and there was some sense of desperation when it came to writing the next album and digging themselves out of the third-tier rut that they thought they were on the cusp of escaping, but just couldn't quite manage to climb out of. Hell Chose Me was a major change in sound that managed the rare feat of winning over the naysayers while also not alienating their established fanbase, and it wound up becoming a major influence on 2010s deathcore.
  • Nightmare Fuel: The cover art for The Diseased and The Poisoned, big time.
  • Signature Song: "Lie to My Face" or "Hell Chose Me'', "Drown Me in Blood" for post-reunion Carnifex.
  • Vindicated by History: To a degree with Hell Chose Me. While it was very well-received at the time and managed to gain a bunch of new fans without losing their old fans, its impact, along with that of Oceano's Depths, would only be felt in the later half of the 2010s, as a lot of newer deathcore acts (namely Thy Art Is Murder, Lorna Shore, and Aversions Crown) were visibly influenced by it, and it is because of their impact on newer acts that they went from being a band that was never that big on their first go and had likely plateaued by the time that they went on hiatus to being one of the faces of the genre after their reunion.
