• Anvilicious: Environmentalism in spades. Especially speaks out against bottom-trawling, and the devastation of the rainforest.
• Cliché Storm: It's very little what you can find in Caretaker that you have never seen or read in similar science-fiction young adult literature. And there are the aptly but quite unoriginally named Dark Army and Dark Lord.
• What Do You Mean, It's for Kids?: The trilogy is marketed as juvenile literature and even below in some countries, despite containing some very graphic sexual overtones.
