  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Is Tom merely a Wholesome Crossdresser, a gender non-conformist, a Drag Queen, or possibly a trans woman?
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: The movie can't seem to make up its mind about whether it's satirizing homophobia or reinforcing it. While the main characters' Freak Out once they realize they're on a gay single's cruise is played as a pointless overreaction and later scenes have them learning that being gay is perfectly normal, it's all undermined by scenes depicting gay men as walking Cringe Comedy. In a more enlightened age, it might have been funnier for the movie to have been about some perfectly normal people on a singles' cruise while two weirdos are freaking out the whole time for no reason.
  • Values Dissonance: 2002 may very well have been the last time a movie like this could be made, when it would have been seen as audacious, but socially acceptable. A mere decade after its release and several major leaps forward in gay visibility - including gay marriage being legalized all across the United States - and it might as well be a hate crime.
