YMMV / Bluebeard (1972)

Go To

  • Aluminum Christmas Trees: The insignia used by Bluebeard's forces may seem to be a made-up substitute for a swastika, but it is in fact based on the symbol that represented the real-life Fatherland Front, a fascist group that ruled Austria in the 1930s before Austria was annexed by Nazi Germany (which is why they ironically, despite being fascist, were fervently anti-Nazi). Outside the insignia, though, the overall aestethic of Bluebeard's forces seems to be definitely Putting on the Reich.
  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • Marilu Tolo as Brigitt bears more than a passing resemblance to Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton's real-life wife at the time, which makes the fight scene between the two's characters a little wince-inducing if you know it was during filming of this film that Taylor and Burton's marriage broke down amid various public fights, leading to their (first) divorce.
    • Joey Heatherton having to deal with an abusive (as in, a Serial Killer) husband can be hard to watch when having in mind that Heatherton would be arrested in 1986 for stabbing her ex-boyfriend Jerry Fisher in the hand with a steak knife during an argument (though the charges were later dropped).
  • So Bad, It's Good: Bluebeard was generally savaged by critics, many who felt that it showcased the painful decline of Richard Burton's career, though some viewers and retrospective review found some Camp value on it.
  • Special Effect Failure: The frozen bodies of the Baron's victims in the walk-in freezer that are discovered by Anne are actually rather obviously mannequins. While the filmmakers probably counted on the justification that the bodies would be shriveled at that point to explain their look, some of them don't even look that much like the actual actresses.
