  • Everyone Is Jesus in Purgatory: The reason for the girls having card suits for pupils as stated by the creator is just Rule of Cute. That didn't stop some people from theorizing about a deeper meaning, however.

  • Jerkass Woobie: Haruka. It's heavily implied that her father is abusive (or outright stated if you do her route and get her to open up about it) and the protagonist has been her only friend since they were children. Haruka is clingy towards the protagonist because they were the only person she could run to when dealing with her father's abuse, and she's afraid they'll drift apart from each other after highschool. She has also experienced bullying in the past, which is why she's so defensive around others and pushes them away before they get a chance to know her. Haruka even acts like this around her own friend, the protagonist, at times. When they get even slightly upset or annoyed with her, she takes it as sign that they hate her and will abandon her eventually.

  • LGBT Fanbase: Although the fanbase is small, the game has a few LGBT fans because of the gender options. Yumi in particular has gender-nonconforming fans for having a very masculine design, which isn't all that common for a female character in a dating sim.

  • They Copied It, So It Sucks!: When the first demo was released, there were a few people that dismissed the game as a Doki Doki Literature Club! clone. While the two games do have a few similarities (like being disguised horror stories and parodies/deconstructions of dating sims), the characters and plot of the two games are not really comparable, as Beyond You! has more of a mystery narrative surrounding a school fire on top of the "dating" aspect.

  • The Woobie: Aiko, Kana, and Yumi can be considered woobies because of their school burning down. Special mention goes to Kana though, since she's the one who's past we've been given the most insight about for now. Kana has Dissociative Identity Disorder and she was frequently bullied at her old school because of her diagnosis and mental health struggles. Some time down the line, she was expelled and started attending Minami School with Aiko since their parents knew each other. Kana was still treated mostly the same and on the rare occasions people were nice to her, it was just because her father had money. Aiko remained her Only Friend, but then the fire happened, which caused Kana to have to switch schools again. Then when she transfers to the MC's school, rumors begin to spread about her. One can only assume it was Aila who spread the rumors because she came to the Player and told them Kana's personal information without her knowledge. To make matters worse, the higher-ups at the school seems to be enabling Aila's behavior because they're the ones who told her to "keep an eye" on (i.e. stalk) Kana in the first place. There's a Realism-Induced Horror aspect of it too because this is how people with mental disorders are often treated in Real Life. One reason why Kana wanted to tell the MC about her disorder is because the rumors were spreading and she didn't want them to think less of her. You just want to hug her after everything she's been through.
