YMMV / Batman Beyond S1 E8 "Heroes"

Go To

  • Broken Base: To some this is a clever riff on Marvel with a uniquely dark take on the Fantastic Four. To others it's just a pointlessly grim and mean-spirited episode that's too rushed to convey any meaningful themes and doesn't flow well with the rest of the show.
  • Older Than They Think: This is not the first time DC has done a deconstructionist take of the Fantastic Four. Hank Henshaw, the Cyborg Superman, started off as a Reed Richards Expy who took his family into a radiation cloud that mutated them all — mostly into tragic abominations that died soon after, driving him insane.
  • Unfortunate Character Design: Many were quick to notice General Norman’s resemblance to Adolf Hitler.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: Some detractors of this episode point out that the Trio's attempt to suicide bomb Gotham at the end out of spite, something characters with similar conditions like Inque, Mr. Freeze or even Blight never sank to, is too extreme and knocks off a few sympathy points. While their rage is justified, they're punishing people who had nothing to do with their tragedy alongside Hodges. The only explanation given is that their sanity is deteriorating, but this is only the word of paranoid General Norman.
