YMMV / Avatar: The Last Airbender "Zuko Alone"

Go To

  • Alternate Character Interpretation: The veracity of Azulon's demand that Ozai kill Zuko, and whether the order was as literal as Azula claims it was, is a topic debated within the fandom to this day.
  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • That random battlefield that Zuko passes through is the one where Avatar Wan died.
    • Remember when Azula was telling Zuko that their father was going to kill him? Ozai later confirms she was telling the truth.
  • Jerkass Woobie: This is the episode that makes it absolutely clear that Zuko is this. His cousin died in the war, his father never appreciated him, his sister treated him terribly, and his loving mother left for unknown reasons.
  • Narm: Azulon's eulogy is mostly just reciting his ancestors and descendants, as if they were reading an obituary in a newspaper. It's a little hard to take seriously.
  • Sacred Cow: Widely considered to be one of the best, if not THE best, episodes of a series that already qualifies as this overall.
  • Signature Scene:
    • Zuko announcing his identity as Prince of the Fire Nation, and his subsequent shunning by the people he had just saved. Famous not only because it serves as the basis behind one of the saddest endings of the series, but also because it serves as an important turning point in Zuko's acclaimed character arc by demonstrating to him the evil that his father's war is wreaking on the world.
