YMMV / Anatomy of a Fall

Go To

  • Ensemble Dark Horse: For a character study that's largely centered around Sandra, there are several side characters who've become popular in their own rights:
    • Daniel's dog Snoop is massively beloved for being a very devoted animal companion to his owner, as well as playing a major role in the testimony that gets Sandra off the hook. His actor Messi was also a very popular fixture during awards season, winning the Palme Dog Award at Cannes, having his own Letterboxd Four Favorites video, and the Academy both inviting him to their annual pre-Oscars luncheon (something typically exclusively reserved for nominees) and commissioning five separate pictures of him while every other nominee only received one.
    • Vincent also became very popular for being a Nice Guy who's nothing but supportive towards Sandra and for his Ship Tease with her. His attractiveness has also led to him developing a notable Estrogen Brigade, with fancams of him popping up mere days after the film's American theatrical release.
    • Even the unnamed prosecutor in Sandra's case trying to argue that she is guilty of her alleged crime has developed a bit of popularity. Despite being an antagonist (albeit one who's just doing his job), he's so smarmy and pettily vindictive towards Sandra that he becomes a very entertaining character to watch.
  • Fandom Rivalry: After the announcement of Oscar nominees, Barbie (2023) became one due to Justine Triet and Sandra Hüller taking Best Director and Best Leading Actress over Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie.
  • The Inverse Law of Fandom Levity: The film is a serious courtroom drama and character study about a woman who may or may not have killed her husband, something that's deliberately kept ambiguous and up to viewer interpretation. The fandom, however, is significantly more lighthearted, doing things like joking about how the steel drum instrumental cover of 50 Cent's "P.I.M.P." is the go-to song for jumping out of a window, making fancams of every character (especially Vincent), and heaping massive amounts of adoration towards Daniel's dog Snoop, who quickly became one of the film's most popular characters.
  • Memetic Mutation: Because the song 50 Cent's "P.I.M.P." was played right before Samuel's fall, fans have joked that it's the go-to music for jumping out the window.
  • Narm Charm: The part from Sandra's monologue to Samuel - "your generosity conceals something dirtier and meaner!" - might sounds like a Narm to some Anglophone audiences for its overdramatic wordings. But considering this scene's main context is where a pair of dysfunctional European couple who are not native English-speakers themselves and have to force to use it for communication, and it also Played for Drama.
  • Tear Jerker: Even if you consider Sandra completely innocent and wasn't involved in Samuel's death, she still feel devastated over his unexpected death that could either be caused by an accident or his suicidal tendency. This would all reflected after her acquittal. Same can be said about their son.
