- Bizarro Episode: L'île Maudite (The Cursed Island) is probably the weirdest of them all. It deals with the Phoenicians using technologies ahead of their time against the Romans. This isn't the first time Anachronism Stew crept up in the series, but this one takes the cake.
- Complete Monster: Arbaces is by far Alix's cruelest adversary. Introduced as a scheming Greek merchant who attempted to have Alix publicly executed and his companion Toraya murdered, Arbaces always returns for more wicked plans. Enslaving travelers for his mines in Efaoud, Arbaces weaponizes gunpowder and compels Alix into working for him by threatening to toss his friend Enak to hungry rats. Joining Sardon in his crusade of extermination against an Egyptian colony, Arbaces tortures two men to death for interrogation and suggests the sacrifice of Alix and his companions before leaving Sardon to die. After usurping Oribal's throne, Arbaces tries to throw Enak off the wall of Zur-Bakal and destroys a dam to flood the entire city. Leading a fleet of pirates, Arbaces pillages and sacks Icarios, planning to sell the survivors into slavery after killing the elders. Rebuilding Khorsabad, Arbaces forces slaves to work in his mines, not caring that they regularly die. After attempting to put out Alix and Enak's eyes, Arbaces set fire to the city. Leading the cult of Moloch Baal, Arbaces slaughters farms in the country of Rome and abducts children that he sacrifices to the fire. Joining King Pharnaces, Arbaces and his army utterly massacre Samsat.
- Ensemble Dark Horse: Enak was supposed to appear only in Le Sphinx d'or. Numerous readers wrote Jacques Martin to ask for Enak's return. This is why Enak suddenly arrives in Carthage in L'Île maudite and why he has always followed Alix since then.
- Ho Yay: Enak has bouts of Clingy Jealous Girl from time to time.
- Late-Arrival Spoiler: If know your ancient history well, you'll already know that some major characters will die by the time Alix Senator rolls in.
- The Scrappy: Khephren is not very well-liked by fans. While his anger toward his father can be understandable, his hate for his foster father, Alix, isn't. Alix pretty much raise and love Khephren like he did with his own son, Titus. Alix even goes to Egypt to help Khephren find the Statue of the Cybel, no matter how pointless this quest is. In fact, Alix put up with a lot of Khephren's jerkassness and the boy blames Alix and everyone for the troubles he got himself into. Khephren's obsession with the Statue of the Cybel not only make him unlikable, his delusions of grandeur that he could rule the world are foolishly unrealistic considering that Khephren has no skills of worth. His stupid death is a huge relief for the readers.
- Too Cool to Live: Many, many characters are one-album only for this reason. If they live and return in a subsequent album, they get it then. (Except for Arbaces.)
