YMMV / Aida (Verdi)

• Awesome Music: Being an opera, a grand opera no less, Verdi's Aida is chock full of musical numbers: "Celeste Aida," "Ritorna vincitor," the "Triumphal March," and so on.
• Ensemble Dark Horse: Amneris tends to be this in a lot of productions, and many critics have even said that the title of the opera could easily be called Amneris, instead of Aida.
• Jerkass Woobie: By all accounts, Amneris is a Clingy Jealous Girl, but when she realizes that her jealousy has become the death of Radames, you can't help but feel sorry for her, especially when she prays that Radames make a safe journey to the afterlife, right at the end.
• Unintentionally Unsympathetic: Radamès is portrayed as a victim of the sinister priests for being condemned to death as a traitor, but he intentionally revealed an important military secret to Aida and was planning to desert his command and run away with her, which would get him condemned to death pretty much anywhere.
• The Woobie: Aida, natch. First, she is torn between her Egyptian lover and her Ethiopian father and realizes that she cannot pray for the one while cursing the other. All she can do is pray for the gods to have pity on her. Then, Amneris figures out that Aida is in love with Radames and goes Clingy Jealous Girl on her, again reducing Aida to praying for pity. After that, when the Pharaoh announces that Radames may marry Amneris, his daughter, Aida despairs of ever seeing her fatherland again. Not even Aida's own father, Amonasro, will give her a break; instead of respecting her refusal to extract the Egyptian strategic maneuvers from Radames like a good father would, he forces her to believe that doing so is a matter of life and death for her nation by intimidating her to the point of tears. When she does seduce the vital information from her lover, Radames is promptly accused of treason and sentenced to be Buried Alive, whereupon Aida, whose father has already been killed, decides to die with her lover.
