YMMV / After School Midnighters

Go To

  • Ho Yay: Kunstlijk and Goth have a close relationship with lots of physical contact. The suggestion there's a romantic angle to it all is even stronger in the shorts. One example is in "Haunted House", where they are initially afraid to enter a haunted mansion but eventually go inside holding hands. Another example is the cover of the first season of shorts that depicts them as lying in the grass similar to how the movie cover of The Fault in Our Stars depicts its own two protagonists.
  • Values Dissonance: Mako obtains a Native American war bonnet at the school and wears it for the entire adventure. She also performs a stereotypical imitation of Native American dance upon obtaining it. This isn't okay anywhere, even if Japan is less aware of why it's not okay, and makes the film unnecessarily uncomfortable to a Western audience.
  • What Do You Mean, It's for Kids?: The gruesome elements of After School Midnighters are the half-flayed appearances of Kunstlijk and the formalin-preserved rabbits. In Japan and surrounding countries, the moving anatomy model is one of the most popular school ghosts, arguably only outdone by Hanako, and therefore a casual appearance in any given horror fiction. In the West, animate anatomy models are rare and therefore their appearance is all the more body horror. The rabbits are even worse, because while Kunstlijk is a simulacrum, they were killed to end up like this and their scream upon being revived is a clear reminder of that. While the classic science room ghosts technically are the full set of an anatomy model, a skeleton model, and formalin-stored small animals, the animals are an extremely rare inclusion in fiction. It's surprising After School Midnighters incorporates them.
