  • Accidental Aesop: Several:
    • If you notice a family member or close friend has severe anger issues and/or has been through a good amount of trauma or grief (such as infidelity or a divorce) get them help. Melinda's descent probably could've been mitigated if her family had gotten her the mental health counseling she needed earlier. Especially in light of the ending where it's implied she had undiagnosed Borderline Personality Disorder.
    • Never forget that love matters the most. Robert was so focused on getting his battery sold to Prescott that he neglected his relationship with his wife which left her vulnerable enough to believe that he was just using her for her money and cheated on her again. This is pointed out in one poignant scene where Robert lists all of the things he wants to give Melinda and she tiredly replies that he "never asked her what she wanted".
  • Memetic Mutation: Melinda's Offscreen Teleportation scene, especially in light of podcast The Read highlighting the absurd scene.
  • Took the Bad Film Seriously: Critics who panned the movie still gave Henson props for her performance.
  • Unintentionally Sympathetic: Robert. The films tries to show that Robert's selfish behavior during his relationship with Melinda is what drove her crazy. However, while Robert is far from perfect as he did cheat of Melinda in college, the film also showed he wasn't that bad of a person either and for the most part seemed misunderstood. He even tries to make things right by giving Melinda 10 million dollars and the deed to her mother's house after he became rich off his invention, and after they were already divorced. There is also the fact that we're only hearing Melinda's side of the story, so many of the things she claimed Robert did might be untrue.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: On the other hand many of Robert's actions tend to come off as textbook examples of emotional abuse or at the very least make him seem immature and selfish, such as hiding his previous felony record and accusing her of not defending him to her family. Furthermore, though one could view this movie as its own thing,Tyler Perry's portrayal of black women vs black men makes his films fairly controversial, considering Robert gets a happy ending indirectly because of his infidelity before his marriage with Melinda, no less, while Melinda ends up bitter and dead.
