YMMV / AI Sponge

Go To

  • Base-Breaking Character: The French Narrator. Some people love his Lemony Narrator dialogue and find that he has some of the funniest lines in the stream, while others bemoan how the AI often treats him like any other character and has him converse normally with the other characters, unlike in the original show ("Feral Friends" aside).
  • Bizarro Episode: Some episodes are utterly nonsensical even by the stream's usual standards, with strange animations and extremely incoherent dialogue.
(Plankton is tumbling back and forth while Squidward is flying around)
Plankton: LARRY WE NEED THE SPONGE EYEnote  COMMUNITY MANAGERS TO PROMOTE BUGGY REAL TEAMnote  TO COMMUNITY MANAGER!!!
    Larry: That's a great ideenote .
(Squidward stops flying and levitates in place)
(Plankton T-poses and spins around in place)
  • Contested Sequel: AI Sponge Rebooted. Many fans were grateful to have a new (and extensively tested!) AI Sponge stream after the death of Jazza's original and welcomed some of its new features with open arms (such as more environments and characters and dedicated song topics). However, others bemoaned the slower pace and more subdued nature of the streams, partially owing to the improved (read: less loopy) TTS voices with fewer mispronunciations and strokes. Eventually, the source code for Rebooted changed hands and it was immediately relaunched as AI Sponge Rehydrated after its apparent cancellation, Growing the Beard and becoming an Even Better Sequel.
  • Crossover Ship: Loudward is often shipped with Loudris, the similarly loud-voiced version of Chris Griffin from the Family Guy "AI Peter" streams, via segments and prompts in both shows.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • Gary only has his one line, but whenever he appears on stream, you can fully expect the chat to go feral over the little snail. Jokingly, the chat frequently praises him and mimics his singular voice-line.
    • Perch Perkins in Rehydrated quickly became a fan-favorite because of his silly mispronunciations and very common Broken Record strokes.
  • Even Better Sequel: AI Sponge Rehydrated features more characters and locations than Jazza's original stream, features more expressive and varied character animations (particularly during song topics) and, unlike Rebooted, retains the chaotic atmosphere and easy-to-trigger strokes of the original. Accordingly, out of all the incarnations of AI Sponge, its streams garnered the most viewers and attention since Jazza's original.
  • Fan Nickname:
    • "Loudward" for Squidward, easily the most infamous one, due to the increased volume at which he talks. This subsequently led to the prompts and stream itself occasionally using the "Loudward" name.
      • In later streams where Squidward's model would randomly zoom around and fly, "Speedward", "Zoomward" and "Flyward" also became pretty common nicknames for him in chat.
    • Similar to Loudward, Plankton is often called "Loudton" or "Plankloud" due to his own ear-splitting dialogue. Likewise, the AI_CARTOON stream transfers the "loud curse" to SpongeBob, earning him the moniker "LoudBob" or "LoudSponge".
    • Whenever a character suffers from a stroke, expect the chat to call them by a stroke-themed nickname in their messages, e.g. "STROKEBOB", "STROKETRICK"/"PATROKE", etc.
    • Mr. Krabs and Mrs. Puff tend to be referred to as "Mr.         Krabs" and "Mrs.         Puff" due to the AI's tendency to insert Dramatic Pauses in their names (likely due to it misinterpreting the period).
  • Fountain of Memes:
    • Just like his canon counterpart, Loudward is a huge source of the stream's memes thanks to his extremely loud voice, tendency to be the Only Sane Man in spite of his own quirkiness, occasional strokes, bizarre quotes, assorted doomsday predictions, and random instances of his model breaking, zooming around and flying.
    • As of Rehydrated, Plankton has also become this due to his Black Speech abbreviation strokes, with any abbreviation in the English language becoming an instant meme if spoken by him. Even in Jazza's original streams, he was still memorable for being such an erratically buggy character, T-posing after every sentence and speaking in a loud voice similar to Loudward.
  • Growing the Beard:
    • The streams started out (comparatively) slow and uneventful, mostly consisting of random conversations between SpongeBob and Patrick. Once Loudward started playing a larger role in segments and developing his signature memes, the streams started becoming much wackier and more random.
    • Rebooted and Rehydrated started out as Contested Sequels to the original stream, but once people started discovering Plankton's "Dr. Jr." strokes, they started to develop more of the wacky randomness that the original was known for.
  • Nightmare Fuel: Some of Loudward's doomsday chants can be surprisingly ominous, especially combined with his startlingly loud voice. It can catch some viewers off guard, particularly if they use AI Sponge as background noise for work or sleep.
  • Quirky Work: The streams can best be described as a combination of Spongebob Squarepants and a bad drug trip. Which the characters themselves go on and then suffer from brain hemorrhages.
  • So Bad, It's Good: The stiff animation, strange physics, unnecessarily explicit subject matter, awkward robotic approximations of SpongeBob characters' voices and personalities, frequent strokes, and general lack of logic or sense make for a hilariously surreal viewing experience.
  • So Bad, It Was Better: All relaunched versions of AI Sponge (Rebooted, Rehydrated and AI_CARTOON) had this reaction, as they were forced to use different sources such as FakeYou with improved SpongeBob TTS voices after said voices were taken down from Uberduck. These improved voices resulted in fewer strokes and silly mispronunciations that were a big part of the original stream's humor, and only really hit their stride in Rehydrated when people started to discover Plankton's "Dr. Jr." strokes.
  • Special Effects Failure:
    • Mr. Krabs' mouth doesn't move when he talks, and in the Rebooted stream, this also applies to Sandy. In the AI_CARTOON stream, the only characters with moving mouths are SpongeBob, Patrick and Squidward; everyone else instead uses a full-body "talking" gesture animation similar to AI Peter.
    • Pearl's model in AI_CARTOON's reboot is very low-poly and quite horrifying, especially next to the other Bikini Bottomites' high-res, polished models. Her hair is also an obvious flat texture. She keeps this model in AI Sponge Rehydrated.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: The AI_CARTOON version of the show, known as AI Generated SpongeBob, started out as a decent, viable alternative to fill the void left by Jazza's streams being permanently canceled. While not as well-liked as the original, it had its fans and some lore of its own, and was notable for introducing the AI Sponge versions of Karen and Pearl. However, once AI Sponge Rebooted began to stream, AI_CARTOON started to add more characters from other media (such as The Impostor, Peter Griffinnote  and Donald Trump), possibly to distance itself from Rebooted, and saw its numbers decline as fans felt that it was starting to lose its charm. Eventually, the stream got rid of the signature SpongeBob time cards and added more non-SpongeBob characters (such as Peppa Pig and a generic policeman), losing sight of its original concept and causing viewership to plummet, especially with Rebooted and later Rehydrated available as tighter and funnier alternatives.
